Free Energy: Or How to Violate Physics Without Getting Arrested

An inventor presents a wheel of magnets and gears to a skeptical onlooker in a Calcutta workshop.

In 1719, a German inventor named Johann Bessler published a book about a wheel he claimed could turn forever. His rivals were not convinced, but the dream of getting something for nothing kept spinning long after the wheel stopped. The book survives; the free energy, somehow, does not.

The Universe, a perpetually indifferent asshole, decided eons ago that we, the uppity chimps on this watery rock, must slave away under laws—inescapable, unbendable, and frankly, fucking inconvenient. Chief amongst these miseries: you can’t get something for nothing. Ever. Free lunch? Bullshit. Free sex? Don’t kid yourself. Free energy? Now that’s a joke so grand even our universe cracks cosmic flatulence laughing.

Let’s unfold this onion slowly (and cry, probably). First, “free”—etymologically sprouting from Proto-Germanic frijaz, meaning “beloved, dear,” which explains exactly why everyone loves shit labeled “free.” Next, “energy”—borrowed shamelessly from Greek energeia meaning “activity, operation,” coined by Aristotle, who, frankly, had way too much free fucking time to think.

Combine these two darling words and, in the something-for-nothing sense, you get a pseudoscientific dumpster fire: “Free Energy”—the perpetual motion orgy, a holy grail dripping with snake oil, delusions, and shattered hopes, peddled by hucksters whose careers, like their machines, run on gullibility instead of thermodynamics. Physicists also use “free energy” as a legitimate technical term; that is a different beast altogether.

Thermodynamics, meanwhile, is the sadistic gatekeeper in this carnival of cosmic impossibilities, dictating that energy isn’t born, nor does it casually disappear; it transforms, while irreversible processes leave less of it available to do useful work. Entropy, for an isolated system, doesn’t decrease—the universe’s relentless march toward equilibrium. Imagine your cluttered bedroom becoming shittier every day until you die—exactly like your existence, but on a cosmic scale.

But did that stop human ingenuity from banging its head repeatedly into the wall of physics? Fuck no. Since at least the Middle Ages, hopeful fools have been chasing perpetual motion machines—contraptions that once started, never stop spinning, rotating, bouncing, or jerking about (much like certain neighbors in South Calcutta flats)—without needing any additional energy input. The claim: Infinite energy output! The reality: Infinite embarrassment output.

Consider Johann Bessler, aka “Orffyreus” (1710s Germany), who swore by his machine’s magic endless spinning wheels, guarded their workings like a teenage boy with his browser history, and took their secret to his grave. Or Nikola Tesla—god-bless-his-weird-ass-soul—who in 1901 began Wardenclyffe Tower, intending wireless communication and global power transmission, but ran out of funding before his grand project could deliver. Wireless transmission would have moved energy, not conjured it from nothing, yet today’s YouTube idiots still believe he had secret free-energy notes hidden up his pigeon-covered ass.

Then there’s zero-point energy—quantum physics’ version of teasing foreplay: the mysterious energy lingering in empty space itself. This sounds tempting until you realize the trickiness of quantum fields—imagine trying to milk a mosquito’s fart for power. No one has demonstrated a way to extract a continuous net supply of power from the vacuum. Yet it’s irresistibly sexy jargon for scammy tech startups promising to harvest free power straight from quantum ass-space.

And now, more recently, internet-infested Calcutta forums buzz about “magnetic perpetual motors” or “resonant energy harvesting”—terms that can be dressed up to translate roughly to “Please, take my money while kicking me repeatedly in the balls.” Resonant energy harvesting is real, but it draws energy from its surroundings; resonance is not a magic fuel.

Still hopeful? Ask yourself: If free energy existed, wouldn’t Jeff Bezos have bottled and sold it by now? Exactly.

In the end, “free energy” in the perpetual-motion sense is humanity’s stubborn refusal to accept reality’s dickishness, our glorious fantasy about cheating the cosmic casino. It’s a seductive illusion, a mirage of scientific porn promising limitless power, universal abundance, and eternal bliss. Unfortunately, entropy’s bitchy rules stand unviolated, unimpressed, and forever mocking our sweaty, desperate attempts.

And so we toil, sweating under the punishing Calcutta heat, burdened by electricity bills so hefty they make our monthly rent look anorexic. Free energy remains a fantasy, a philosophical masturbation session—pleasurable, perhaps, but ultimately pointless.

Or maybe—just maybe—the universe isn’t laughing at us. It’s laughing with us. Nope, fuck it—definitely laughing at us.
