I Wanted a Life

A man sits on a worn staircase beneath a robotic hand holding a fountain pen, while loose pages fly toward a moonlit window overlooking Calcutta.

I wanted a life
it didn't work
I wanted to write
the bots had pens
I wanted to work
no one hires honest men
So I stay home
and lie flat all day.

The world is changed
I didn't change it.
Change happens slowly
I thought
I was wrong.
Everything went from this to that
in small change of years,
I stood where I was
half dead
buried in yesterday's thoughts.

Now I mutter to the wind
and they say I'm mad.
I may be
and that's quite all right now.
These are the times
when madness seems really right.
And I am one
already halfway through the stairs.

I never knew
what I was saying
ever,
Even now,
I don't really know
where I'm going with this.
But if I'm going mad
or if crazy is the way the wind blows,
Then hey,
the words sing just the right tune
I think.
