There is a particular species of comfort, thick and greasy as the gravy on a Calcutta railway-platform chop, in believing that one’s own profession is the last citadel — that the barbarians of automation may sack the accountants and pillage the paralegals but will never, never scale the walls of whatever it is you happen to do with your one wild and precious life. I nursed this comfort for fifteen years the way a man nurses a boil, and I will confess the confession now because confession is cheap and the boil has burst: I thought healthcare research, with its statistical novenas and its ethics-committee kabuki, was safe. Then AI systems began outperforming human readers on particular medical-imaging tests, and I felt the cold draft of the abyss tickle my professional sphincter, that tight little ring of complacency we all clench when the elevator drops half a floor. A reading test is a considerable distance from the whole practice of radiology. Unfortunately, professional vanity tends to hear the approaching footsteps before it reads the methods section.
But this is not about me. This is about the beautiful people, and their turn has come, and I am watching the proceedings with the serene, unwholesome satisfaction of a man who was never beautiful and therefore imagines he has nothing to lose.
The channel is called China Observer, and it arrives on YouTube with the subtlety of a wet fart in a meditation retreat — breathless, ominous, narrated in the tone of a man who has been paid to discover things and has discovered exactly what he was paid to discover. Some of it has the flavor of agitprop confetti, the usual outrage seasoned for an audience that likes its China permanently on the verge of collapse. But here is the thing about propaganda, and I say this as a man who has consumed propaganda from three continents and found all of it equally constipating: exaggeration can attach itself to a real development and ride it like a municipal parasite. Peel away the theatrical mourning and there is still something worth examining. Human faces and voices are becoming reproducible commercial inputs, and some of the humans attached to them are discovering that the attachment is negotiable.
The numbers, because the numbers are where the poetry hides, provided somebody has first checked the zeros. According to China Netcasting Services Association figures reported in the press, roughly one hundred and twenty-eight thousand micro-dramas were released in China in the first quarter of 2026 — one quarter, three months, the time it takes a Calcutta municipality to fix a pothole if the planets align. More than ninety-five percent were reportedly made using AI. These are figures about releases and production methods, not a head count of actors replaced, and “made using AI” does not establish that no human being wrote, directed, edited, or otherwise interfered with the proceedings. The number is alarming enough without being dressed in somebody else’s trousers.
Real actors, the kind with cheekbones and agents and complicated coffee orders, are nevertheless competing with a multiplying supply of synthetic performers whose appearance can be revised without waiting for puberty, plastic surgery, or divine intervention. Chen Yilong, the Los Angeles Times reported, licensed his likeness as acting work grew scarce. An actor once worried about being typecast. Now there is the possibility of being cast without the tiresome necessity of being there.
I want to sit with this for a moment, because the moment deserves sitting with, the way one sits with a bad diagnosis or a good scotch. The face — the human face, that evolutionary masterpiece of signaling and deception, the canvas on which we paint our vanities and our sorrows and our carefully curated illusions of competence — can now supply the raw material for a digital performance. Not the whole person. The commercially useful resemblance. Your face, my face, the face that took your mother nine months and several decades of worry to produce, can be made to appear in scenes you never stood in, expressing emotions you never felt, under arrangements you may or may not have agreed to.
The etymology here is almost too perfect to mention, but I will mention it anyway because I am that kind of bastard: “person” comes through French from the Latin persona, a word for a theatrical mask or role. We have come full circle. The mask has learned to work without the face. The persona has acquired a career independent of the person. O tempora, o mores, o magnificent and thoroughgoing bowel movement of history.
And it is not merely that these synthetic thespians sit pretty in a frame, static and inert, a kind of digital taxidermy. No. They sing. They emote. They act — or rather, they can produce the visible and audible appearance of acting, which is enough for some productions and nowhere near enough for others. They can be made to weep on command, to laugh with a convincing cadence, to deliver a love scene with all the passion of a spreadsheet and none of the embarrassment of meeting the other participant at breakfast.
There are still costs. There is still human work. Somebody has to decide what to make, generate it, reject the rubbish, assemble the usable pieces, and persuade an audience to watch. But the producer’s question is not whether the machine has abolished every expense. It is whether fewer people can deliver something the customer will accept. The replacement need not be a better actor in every conceivable sense. It needs to be adequate for the job being purchased, at a price that makes the accountant breathe through his mouth.
What I keep wanting to call a deflationary spiral is, more precisely, falling production costs and pressure on the price of particular kinds of labor. An economy-wide collapse in prices does not follow automatically. The distinction matters to economists. To the actor whose next contract has evaporated, the absence of a formally certified macroeconomic catastrophe may offer limited nourishment.
The doomers, those professional mourners of the technological apocalypse, those Cassandras with subscription buttons, will tell you that everything will change by midnight tomorrow. Their calendars deserve considerably less respect than their invoices. But a foolish deadline does not make the underlying pressure imaginary. Much of the change can arrive as a slow seep, a rising damp, the kind of incremental erosion that you notice only when the floor gives way. One contract gets smaller. One supporting role disappears. One production hires fewer people. An expanding mountain of new content does not translate neatly into an expanding mountain of livelihoods.
The actors need not all vanish. There only need to be more of them chasing fewer adequately paid days.
And now, because the universe is a comedian with a taste for the grotesque, the body itself is having its vanity examined.
Beijing, August 2026. The World Humanoid Robot Games, which is exactly what it sounds like and nothing you were emotionally prepared for. More than two thousand robots competing in events ranging from athletics to practical tasks. The Tiangong Ultra — a name that sounds like a martial arts film and moves like a nightmare — finished the large-size robot 100-meter final in 8.64 seconds. Usain Bolt’s human world record, set in 2009, is 9.58.
Bolt’s record remains the human world record. The robot has not retrospectively confiscated his medals. It has completed a robot race faster than the fastest officially recorded human performance over that distance, which is quite enough to disturb a species that likes to mistake the limits of its own equipment for the limits of the universe.
The developers also reported performances beyond human benchmarks in the 400 meters, the 1,500 meters, and a jumping event. These comparisons belong beside the relevant rules and conditions, rather than being bundled into a declaration that four human athletics records have been transferred to machinery. An electric motor has certain advantages over a hamstring. The interesting achievement is making a machine use those advantages while balancing and moving on two legs.
Now, the sophisticated response — the response of the person who has read their Bryson and their Dawkins and knows that a robot sprinting on a prepared track is not the same as a robot coping with the world — is to point out that these machines still fall, still struggle with unfamiliar situations, and sometimes need a padded barrier to complete the delicate maneuver known to humans as stopping. One Tiangong sprint ended with a collision and a small fire. This is a finishing technique generally discouraged by athletics coaches.
Reuters asked whether robots that can outrun humans can also manage something as apparently modest as connecting a cable. The practical events were designed to test precisely such abilities. Speed does not establish dexterity, and a successful demonstration does not establish reliable performance through an ordinary working day. Spectacular in one department, maddeningly uneven in another: a personality type I recognize from several former colleagues.
But here is what I keep returning to, in the small hours, when the bipolar weather of my mind swings to its depressive longitude and every possibility acquires the solemn authority of a verdict: today’s clumsiness is a poor foundation for lifelong reassurance. Equally, a sequence of impressive demonstrations is not proof of an exponential curve carrying every machine toward universal competence. Batteries, heat, maintenance, safety, manufacturing, and the physical world’s inexhaustible appetite for being awkward all get a vote. An exponential curve on a presentation slide has never had to retrieve a screw from under a refrigerator.
There is enough progress to worry about without promoting it to a law of nature.
I think about Calcutta, because I always think about Calcutta, the way one thinks about a chronic condition. I think about the Maidan on a Sunday, the football matches played on dust and dog shit and pure competitive fury, the cricket matches in every gully where a boy with a borrowed bat imagines himself playing for India. I think about the footballer who trains in the heat, who runs laps at dawn, who sacrifices sleep and the ordinary pleasures of youth for the chance — the infinitesimal, lottery-ticket chance — of being watched, of being cheered, of mattering to strangers for ninety minutes.
It is possible to imagine a stadium full of spectators cheering machines that do not sweat, cramp, or weep when they lose. It is also possible to mistake that picture for evidence that human sport is finished. A motorcycle has been able to humiliate a sprinter for a very long time without anybody deciding to award it the Olympic gold. We watch people compete within human limits; the limits are part of the attraction. The exhausted body, the history, the rivalry, the possibility of choking at the worst possible moment — these are not necessarily defects waiting to be engineered out of the product.
Robot sport may become its own spectacle. Whether it replaces human sport is a question about audiences, institutions, and money, not something settled by a faster lap.
The more immediate lesson of Beijing concerns the ambitions behind the spectacle. According to Huawei, a technology partner of the games, more than forty percent of the events required full autonomy. The engineers are trying to build machines that can perform without someone steering every movement. That matters enormously. It does not, by itself, tell the boy on the Maidan that his boots are redundant. The writing is in the firmware, certainly, but firmware is a poor guide to what makes a crowd love someone.
And this, I think, is the thing that the doomers notice even when their arithmetic becomes evangelical: the old professional exemptions are becoming harder to defend. The artist cannot simply point at the factory worker and assume that automation has an appointment elsewhere. The coder cannot take permanent shelter in the fact that he helped build the tools. The beautiful, the clever, the strong, and the skilled can all find parts of what they sell exposed to cheaper competition.
But the consequences are not democratic. That was a comforting little lie hidden inside the frightening big one. The person selling an hour of labor and the person owning the machinery do not occupy equivalent positions merely because both possess a face. Class, ownership, bargaining power, access to capital, and the ability to survive six months without income remain brutally relevant. A technology can threaten many occupations while enriching a narrow collection of owners. The municipal drain may swallow the monsoon impartially; the houses are not all built at the same height.
The Bhagavad Gita says — and I paraphrase with the irreverence of a man who has read too much and believed too little — that you should attend to your action without fastening yourself to its fruits, and without taking refuge in inaction. Krishna gives this counsel to Arjuna on a battlefield, which is an admirably dramatic setting for advice about managing expectations.
The machines do not possess some superior spiritual entitlement to the harvest. The people financing and selling their work have rather earthly plans for it. The machine performs; somebody invoices. Meanwhile, the displaced human is encouraged to discover the dignity of effort independently of compensation, a philosophical exercise much admired by people whose compensation has already cleared.
I am not afraid, or I am afraid and have decided to call it something else, which is the same thing said with better tailoring. I am curious. Curious the way a man is curious about the exact mechanics by which a lifetime of acquired competence can become harder to sell.
The actors confronting synthetic competition, the radiologists incorporating new tools into particular tasks, the drivers facing automation in some settings, the coders using systems that can produce portions of their own work — these are different stories, proceeding at different speeds. They do not yet add up to the redundancy of the species. They do add up to an increasingly uncomfortable question about how securely any of us can mortgage the future against what we presently know how to do.
Human cleverness was never a collective hallucination. The belief that it would always command a comfortable price was considerably more vulnerable to psychiatric examination.
The machines are not cruel. They are not kind. Nor are they simply honest; they can generate magnificent bullshit. Their output reflects what they have been trained and arranged to produce, and the uses to which people put them. The brutal part is the arithmetic being applied to our livelihoods, the assumption that if a cheaper substitute can satisfy the buyer, the person being substituted has become a problem for somebody else’s department.
One hundred and twenty-eight thousand dramas. A robot sprint of 8.64 seconds. More than two thousand machines at a sporting event. One species looking at a collection of achievements and wondering whether it is watching the expansion of its powers or the liquidation of its bargaining position.
The sales pitch, I suspect, is that it was for the machines. It was always for the machines. We were just the beta version — buggy, sentimental, overpriced — and the release candidate has arrived.
Somebody, naturally, still owns the license.
