Architectural Verbs
Forty-five concrete verbs for describing structure, circulation, enclosure, light, air, drainage, materials, adaptation and urban form.

Good architectural verbs explain what a building or place does: where load goes, how people move, what the envelope admits, and how an intervention changes existing fabric. Pair each verb with an object, condition or consequence rather than letting it perform as design perfume.
Structure
- Span — Extend across a distance between supports: “The truss spans the waiting hall.” Name the distance or structural system when it matters.
- Support — Carry load and transfer it onward: “Columns support the slab.” It is broader than brace and should not conceal the actual load path.
- Brace — Stabilise against lateral movement, buckling or racking: “Diagonal members brace the frame against wind loads.”
- Anchor — Fasten an element so it resists pull-out, uplift, sliding or overturning: “Bolts anchor the canopy to the concrete curb.”
- Cantilever — Project beyond a support while being fixed at one end: “The upper floor cantilevers over the entrance.” Do not use it for every unsupported-looking projection.
Circulation
- Connect — Provide a usable link between places or systems: “The bridge connects the clinic to the diagnostic block.” Say whether the connection is public, staff-only, level or accessible.
- Route — Direct a path through chosen spaces: “The plan routes supplies behind the treatment rooms.” It emphasizes an intentional sequence.
- Distribute — Spread movement from a common node into several destinations: “The central landing distributes visitors to four departments.”
- Funnel — Concentrate several flows into a narrower path or checkpoint: “The gate funnels all arrivals past reception.” The verb can expose crowding or control, not just efficiency.
- Separate — Keep flows apart for safety, privacy or operation: “The layout separates sterile supplies from waste removal.” Name where separation begins and whether paths cross later.
Enclosure and thresholds
- Enclose — Define an inside by surrounding space with walls, roof or another boundary: “Glazing encloses the winter garden.”
- Wrap — Continue an envelope or surface around more than one face: “A perforated screen wraps the stair.” It describes continuity, not automatically thermal performance.
- Screen — Partly block view, sun, wind, insects or access while allowing something else through: “Timber battens screen the service yard from the street.”
- Buffer — Insert space or material between incompatible conditions: “A storage band buffers patient rooms from traffic noise.” State what is being buffered from what.
- Seal — Close joints or openings against air, water, smoke or contamination: “Gaskets seal the panel joints.” It should not imply perfect hermetic performance unless tested.
Light
- Admit — Allow light to enter through a deliberate opening: “High windows admit morning light without exposing the room to the road.”
- Filter — Selectively soften or alter incoming light: “Foliage and mesh filter the western sun.” Name the device rather than crediting the building with vague sensitivity.
- Diffuse — Scatter light to reduce contrast and hard shadow: “The translucent panel diffuses daylight across the studio.”
- Reflect — Redirect light from a surface: “The pale soffit reflects light deeper into the ward.” Reflectance and glare may both matter.
- Shade — Block direct solar radiation from a surface or opening: “A deep overhang shades the glazing in summer.” Shade does not necessarily reduce humid air temperature.
Ventilation and thermal movement
- Ventilate — Replace or dilute indoor air through natural or mechanical means: “Operable windows ventilate the classroom.” Specify airflow path and rate where performance matters.
- Draw — Pull air through pressure difference, buoyancy or mechanical suction: “The high vent draws warm air out of the stairwell.”
- Exhaust — Remove air, heat, moisture, smoke or contaminants to a discharge point: “Fans exhaust air from the isolation room.” The destination is part of the design.
- Cross-ventilate — Move air between openings on different sides of a space: “Opposing windows cross-ventilate the office.” Two open windows do not guarantee useful flow without pressure and a clear path.
- Temper — Moderate the temperature or condition of incoming air: “The shaded courtyard tempers air before it reaches the rooms.” It means modify, not necessarily fully condition.
Water and drainage
- Drain — Carry water away from a surface, assembly or site: “The falls drain the terrace toward two outlets.” A drain without slope, capacity and maintenance access is only a fitting.
- Channel — Confine and direct water along a defined route: “A stone runnel channels roof water to the garden.”
- Shed — Throw or allow water to run off an inclined surface: “The coping sheds rain clear of the wall face.”
- Collect — Gather water at a point or in storage: “Valleys collect runoff before it enters the downpipe.” Collection can be an intermediate step, not the final disposal.
- Infiltrate — Allow water to enter soil or a porous layer: “The planted basin infiltrates ordinary stormwater.” Soil, contamination and groundwater conditions limit the claim.
Materials and assembly
- Cast — Form a fluid or plastic material in a mould before it hardens: “The stairs are cast in concrete.” The verb may imply site-cast or precast work, so specify which.
- Bond — Join surfaces through adhesion or material continuity: “Mortar bonds the masonry units.” It differs from a mechanical fixing that can be unbolted.
- Laminate — Build an element by bonding layers: “The beam laminates thin timber sections into a deeper member.”
- Clad — Cover a substrate or frame with an outer facing: “Terracotta tiles clad the rain-screen assembly.” Cladding is not necessarily the waterproofing layer.
- Prefabricate — Manufacture components away from their final position for later assembly: “The contractor prefabricates bathroom pods off site.” It does not by itself guarantee quality or speed.
Adaptation and reuse
- Retrofit — Add or replace systems in an existing building to improve performance or capability: “The project retrofits shading and mechanical ventilation.” It works with inherited constraints.
- Reinforce — Increase an existing element’s capacity or stability: “Steel plates reinforce the damaged beam.” It is narrower than a general renovation.
- Reuse — Put an existing element, structure or space back into service: “The design reuses the warehouse frame.” State whether use is unchanged or adapted.
- Convert — Change a building or room from one use or configuration to another: “The team converts offices into consultation rooms.”
- Extend — Add area, length or capacity beyond the existing limit: “A new wing extends the clinic toward the courtyard.” The junction with old fabric deserves its own explanation.
Urban context
- Front — Present doors, windows or active uses toward a street or public space: “Small shops front the square.” It describes an edge relationship, not simply proximity.
- Set back — Place a building or upper storey behind a boundary or established line: “The tower sets back above the podium to preserve light at street level.”
- Infill — Build within a gap in existing urban fabric: “Housing infills the vacant plot between party walls.” The verb should acknowledge what already defines the site.
- Stitch — Reconnect areas divided by infrastructure, vacancy or an impermeable boundary: “Two crossings stitch the neighbourhood back to the river.” Use it only when actual routes and relationships are restored.
- Activate — Add uses, openings or occupation that produce observable activity: “Doors, benches and evening shops activate the ground-floor edge.” Without naming those mechanisms, activate is empty planning jargon.
Usage notes
The subject of the sentence need not be the architect. A wall braces, a gutter channels, a courtyard buffers, people circulate, and maintenance staff reopen a blocked drain. Be explicit about agency: drawings propose, specifications require, contractors build, materials weather, systems perform, and evidence shows whether the intended action occurred.
